MBA Program Learning Goals
Upon graduation from the Kutztown University Master of Business Administration program, our graduates will be:
What is Accounting?
Accounting has been described as the language of business. While teaching students to understand the principles and methods by which organizations maintain their record-keeping systems, the study of Accounting goes well beyond this. Accounting majors are taught to understand the cause and effect relationship that various financial events have on every part of that organization. No business discipline exists in a vacuum. They are all interdependent of one another. It is the goal of Kutztown's Accounting program to explore how accounting information impacts the day-to-day management decisions of every business.
Why Study Accounting?
The Accounting program at Kutztown is set up to help prepare students for careers in a variety of areas such as financial accounting, cost accounting, accounting information systems, tax accounting and auditing. Our program is flexible enough that students have opportunities to do coursework in a number of these areas. In addition, for those students who prove themselves in the classroom, there are internship opportunities. These internships offer real-world experience in the Accounting profession. Graduates of our Accounting Program are prepared to pursue careers as Certified Public Accountants (CPA), Certified Management Accountants (CMA) or Certified Internal Auditors (CIA).
What is Finance?
Finance is the study of how a society's capital is allocated among competing interests. The Finance major at Kutztown University allows students to explore the economic and social implications of the capital location process.
By emphasizing both the practical and theoretical aspects of finance, the Finance program prepares students for the dynamic nature of today's business environment as well as for graduate studies.
Career Opportunities in Finance
The Finance major at Kutztown University prepares students for career opportunities in the areas of domestic and multinational corporate financial management, the management of financial markets and institutions, personal financial planning, and investment analysis and portfolio management. Recent graduates have found employment with many of the nation's top corporations and financial institutions, including: Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, The Vanguard Group, American Express Financial Services, and many more.
What Is Management?
Management is a dynamic field found in every size business and every type of industry. Managers play many roles including leader, liaison, spokesperson, entrepreneur and negotiator. They work with and through others to accomplish the goals and objectives of organizations and the individuals connected with them. Management students study leadership, team building, strategy, and creative problem solving.
Why Study Management?
First, managers are the decision makers in a diverse and ever-changing global business environment. Their actions and decisions affect everything in our society from what products we find on the store shelves to what we see on television. Management plays a key role in everyday life.
Second, even individuals not in traditional management positions find themselves calling upon their management skills. The focus of a Management major is learning the techniques necessary to achieve goals efficiently and effectively. These skills are required to advance not only in business, but in careers such as medicine, education, and social work.
What is Marketing?
Marketing is pervasive in that it involves a wide array of
activities that are required to create exchanges by which human
needs and wants are satisfied. These exchanges can be personal,
organizational, institutional, for profit or non-profit. In many
ways, marketing touches all aspects of our lives and therefore
creates many challenging and rewarding career opportunities. In
addition, studying marketing makes one a more savvy and informed
consumer.
Why study Marketing?
Marketing graduates pursue careers in a variety of exciting
fields including:

In addition to the required courses, you also take four elective courses that match your professional needs and interests. Elective courses are offered in all the business disciplines. They can be supplemented through independent study and internships.
The Kutztown University MBA program requires that each student acquire basic competencies in the foundation course requirements so that each has the basic skills and knowledge essential for any business degree. These foundation course requirements include the following areas:
Our MBA program applicants come from a wide variety of academic and professional backgrounds. Upon your initial contact with us, we review your transcript to let you know where you stand with respect to the foundation course requirements. Students with undergraduate degrees in business will have completed most or all of the foundation courses. Students with other undergraduate majors have many options for acquiring their foundation.
You may take courses in these subjects at Kutztown University or at any other regionally accredited college or university.
This foundation is not a requirement for admission to the MBA program, but it is a requirement for the M.B.A. degree. Furthermore, satisfaction of each of these foundations is a prerequisite to one or more of the required courses in the M.B.A. curriculum. For example, you must have a foundation in Financial Accounting before you may enroll in ACC 520, Management Accounting Control Systems.
The MBA course director or your academic advisor will work with you to design a plan that works well for you.
